EVDS: McPherson Speculum 2006

The low maintenance, yet very strong biothane poll and nose straps have closely positioned holes, suiting from ponies to warm bloods. The unique design of the sidearm hinges produces a spreader effect to keep the sidearms and poll straps away from the horse's cheeks. With six teeth on the ratchets, the speculum is easy to open and close on all horses. The ratchets have been specifically thickened to add extra insurance against breaking. The McPherson Speculum can also be fitted with an optional incisor plate to accommodate parrot mouths, and an optional padded geriatric plate for old horses.

McPherson speculums are made from strong stainless steelStainless Steel with mirror finish: Professional, aesthetically pleasing. Strong stainless steel is much more resistant to fracturing as with the commonly used cast metal.

Black biothane straps: Flexible, yet strong synthetic straps with no oiling needed.

All straps with holes set with only 15 mm gap in between to allow for closer adjustments: more comfort for the horse, and easier to set the speculum in the correct position — minimising the chance of the horse getting out of the speculum, and biting the arm of the vet.

Poll strap has holes positioned to suit from miniature ponies up to draft horses: the McPherson Speculum suits all sizes of horse, ponies and donkeys.

In-built spreader effect: prevents the side arms and poll straps from pushing the cheeks in, making it easier to file the upper cheek teeth. Also allows the 9" long shafted wolf tooth elevator to be used for extracting wolf teeth in a more precise manner.

Incisor plates have the back lip reduced in height and rounded over: more comfort to the horses — especially older horses with worn down upper incisors — results in these horses behaving better when having the teeth done.

Higher level of iron in the metal of the incisor plates allows magnetic PowerLite to be attachedHigher level of iron in the metal of the incisor plates: able to have a PowerLite head's magnet attach directly onto the speculum's incisor plates — no need to stick on adaptor plates for a PowerLite.

Reinforced ratchets: almost double the thickness of the standard McPherson speculums and Hausman's gags on the market — some of which are fracturing too frequently to be considered safe.

Ratchets with 6 notches: able to accommodate all size horses, with majority of horses and ponies comfortable on 4 clicks. With the ratchets closer together than normal, it is easier to open the speculum. Can go 5 clicks in order to place the “Vet Only” PowerFloat head directly on the occlusal table of the lower last molars if hooks, ramps or ridges present.

Closing tabs at origin of poll straps: allows for easy closing even when horses are squeezing down on the incisor plates.

Optional geriatric plates for old horses are availableOptional geriatric plates for old horses with worn down incisors (see SP04 in the EVDS webstore): more comfort to the horse, thus horse behaves better through tolerating the procedure better.

Optional parrot mouth incisor plate (see SP05 in the EVDS webstore): able to accommodate any level of parrot mouth
